The Investment Banking Club at UNC Kenan-Flagler is dedicated to three primary objectives:

Recruiting Process

The club’s structured recruiting process is designed to guide MBA investment banking candidates through each phase of their career journey. The process is divided into three main phases:

1. Informational Phase (September – October)

  • On-Campus Presentations and Networking Events: Engage with representatives from top investment banks through presentations and networking sessions.
  • Coffee Chats with Second-Year Students: Gain insights and advice from peers who have navigated the investment banking recruitment process.

2. Networking Phase (October – November)

  • Student-Directed Networking: Initiate and manage connections with industry professionals.
  • Phone Calls and Coffee Chats with Bankers: Develop relationships with potential employers through informal conversations.
  • Interview Preparation: Participate in workshops and mock interviews to hone your interviewing skills.

3. Interview Phase (November – February)

  • Live Interviews: Undergo formal interviews with hiring firms.
  • Offers Extended: Secure job offers from leading investment banks.

Diversity and Summer Recruiting

Recognizing the importance of diversity in investment banking, the club actively supports diverse candidates through:

  • Additional Touchpoints with Firms: Early interviews and fellowship opportunities tailored for qualifying candidates.
  • Collaboration with Supporting Organizations: Partnerships with groups such as 100 Women, Forte Foundation, Consortium at UNC, and Reaching Out MBA (ROMBA) to provide additional resources and support.

Prospective students are encouraged to connect with the VP of Diversity & Inclusion or the Full-time MBA Career & Leadership team to optimize their positioning for diversity recruiting.

Club Activities and Resources

  • On-Campus Recruiting Coordination: Organizing and managing recruitment events and activities.
  • Career Treks to New York City and Charlotte: Visit major financial hubs to network and explore career opportunities.
  • Extensive Interview Preparation: Access to behavioral and technical interview training to ensure readiness.
  • Resume Review and Editing: Receive personalized feedback to enhance your professional documents.
  • Dedicated Career Mentors: Each candidate is paired with a second-year student mentor for ongoing support.
  • Financial Modeling and Valuation Courses: Participate in training programs provided by Training the Street to build essential financial skills.
  • Investment Banking Case Competitions: Engage in competitive events hosted by corporate sponsors to apply your knowledge in real-world scenarios.
  • Social Events: Attend club happy hours and other gatherings to build a strong professional network.

Curriculum and Development Programs

Corporate Finance Concentration

Students interested in investment banking often pursue a concentration in Corporate Finance, featuring courses taught by industry-experienced professors. Notable electives include:

  • Mergers & Acquisitions (MBA 789)
  • Investment Banking (MBA 793): An exclusive course led by Scott Rostan, founder of Training The Street, designed to prepare students for summer internships and full-time investment banking careers.

Financial Development Program (FDP)

UNC Kenan-Flagler invests heavily in programs that develop the necessary skill-set for successful investment banking careers. The FDP offers courses in financial modeling, valuation, deal structures, and interview preparation, all provided at no additional cost exclusively for UNC Kenan-Flagler students.

Career Mentorship and Leadership Support

Second Year Career Mentor

New students are paired with experienced second-year classmates trained to assist with the recruiting process, offering guidance on networking etiquette, resume and cover letter reviews, interview preparation, and offer evaluation.

Career & Leadership (C&L) Center

The C&L Center provides personalized coaching to help students develop action plans and prepare for the recruitment process. C&L Coaches are available for individual counseling to help students identify and pursue the career paths that best align with their skills and preferences.
